The first Rolex Explorer watch was officially introduced in 1953 with the reference 6350 after the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. However, references 6098 and 6150 were presented in 1952 as the first prototypes of this model, without the name Explorer on the dial. As its name suggests, Explorer is the ultimate watch for explorers and mountaineers. Made of stainless steel, it is rugged, resistant and can endure the most extreme conditions. The dial is easy to read and features the classic 3,6,9 dial. The goal was to design the ultimate exploration model that could withstand very low temperatures and up to 70% less oxygen than at sea level. The Rolex Explorer 14270 was the first Explorer to feature a sapphire crystal. This reference has the iconic "Explorer dial" (with Arabic numerals "3", "6" and "9"). The "T SWISS - T < 25" marking at 6 o'clock refers to the presence of Tritium in the luminescent markers, with a radioactivity level below 25 MCi, as required by law. The latest models use Luminova and only have the " SWISS " marking.
