The first model of this historical reference dates back to 1963. This model is associated with the world of motor racing and was designed to meet the chronometric needs of professional drivers. The model had, and still has, three counters and a tachymeter scale that allows drivers to precisely measure their time. Despite being Rolex's most famous model, it wasn't an immediate success. The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph with reference 16523 appeared in 1988 and its most outstanding feature is that the case and bracelet are made of 18K yellow gold and steel. This model also uses the Zenith caliber 4030, diameter of 40mm and the index is kept in tritium until 1999 then it is changed by Superluminova. The first bezel has a tachymeter up to the 200 scale and then changed to the 400 scale. The dial comes in various colors such as white, black, champagne and white lacquered.
